Themedian strip is a prime location to situate a dynamic and sophisticatedlighting installation which visually connects the side street that hosts manybars and entertainment venues to the main Oxford Street thoroughfare of cafes,restaurants and boutique shops. During the day the artwork will act as astriking and iconic place marker and in the evening the form will spring tolife with programmed lighting.  Thehighly dynamic display of light will engage the exuberant youthful crowd whoare in tune with technology and creativity, as they walk to their venue.  Articulated surface forms effortlesslyundulate through the void, converging and diverging with the occasional nuancedencounter.  The dynamic forms embody theflow state that one experiences while enjoying music, dance and creativeexpression.  The interaction of theilluminated paths are symbolic of the vibrant social landscape and the manynuances within relationships, both formative and mature.

The continuallychanging surface forms are contained within aperimeter frame that act as the structural support andpath for the lighting. The surface form is compromised of an array of linear elements made of6mm stainless steel cables.  The s/steelcable has excellent light absorbing properties enabling the linear elements to actas a light absorbing surface spreading across the entire installation.  Fitted to theframe is an addressable led strip witha durable metal housing designed to meet the taxing requirements of outdoor andentertainment applications. Theextruded aluminum housing resists shock, vibration and other forms of roughhandling.  Operating of a single cabledramatically simplifies installation and serviceability while lowering thetotal system cost.  Precise resolutioncontrol allows fixtures to be addressed and controlled in increments down to3cm’s, creating a dynamic display of light and colour aswell as video displays.  The scenes canbe energetic at certain times of the week and tranquil when appropriate.  During special occasions, such as the LightUpLeederville Festival, custom lighting displays can bescheduled.  On hot summer evenings thesurface forms could be seen to emulate the turquoise blues of rippling water.Or in winter a colourfulinterpretation of the southern lights(Aurora Australis).

Thesculptural nature of the installation not only takes an innovative approach tolighting but also enhances the appeal during day time.  This intriguing installation will interactwith the changing light of the day casting bold patterns on the ground and thereflective quality of stainless steel cable will reflect the colours ofthe street scape changing with the ambient day light.
